Inspiring and Motivating Your Team

Lead with (blank). The definition of leadership is one that is constantly shape-shifting to keep up with culture, and as today’s becomes a more inclusive one, new voices and methods to motivate a team have entered the chat.

Yes, a leader wants to encourage people to collaborate in an effort to achieve a common goal, but the powerhouses leading the charge are known across industries for their style of empowering through influence and emotion. With a defined mission, one person can improve engagement, productivity and imagination. But without a team, it’s just words echoing in an empty room. The process begins in investing in ambassadors for a collective purpose. Surrounding yourself with people who you genuinely enjoy, trust, learn from and respect will align excitement with responsibility.

Being a leader is a balancing act between accepting the unexpected while maintaining a strong vision. And besides being responsible for every decision made, colleagues work better with transparency. Intrinsic motivation gives you an edge, but authenticity, empowerment and an action bias will elevate leaders to become consistent sources of energy.

Authenticity

This quality is one of magic, something that can’t be replaced. How you treat people is everything, and is a reflection of how you treat yourself internally. You don’t always have to get along with your mind or the people you work with, either – as much as like-mindedness is an important part of a cohesive work environment, differences are what spur innovation. In these times, people connect through vulnerability and intention. In a job that allows you to be yourself, you can be unfiltered and imperfect but still be your best, in high-def.

Empowerment

Empowering others requires a leader to be directly involved in the process. This is where trust comes into play – adapting your style to your teammates’ needs will show you whether the best route is to leave them alone to do what they do best, or to apply a hands-on approach. In boosting morale, your team will feel valued and will want to do the work. Outside of the workspace, they will feel more connected to you on a personal level.

Action bias

With an ability to pivot, strong leaders adapt to change while keeping a focused lens on the goal. On a pedestal of impact, leaders have the opportunity to make the ripples that inspire waves of change. This will demand quick decisions and decisive action. Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, said in her leadership MasterClass, “Engage with whatever is happening in the world in a thoughtful way, and stand up for what you believe is right. Take a point of view, and be thoughtful about it, and stand by your convictions.”

Children think of a leader as someone volunteering to help without being asked; someone who sacrifices themself for a goal; someone kind, honest and brave. These qualities still reign true in adulthood, with added nuance. Leadership is a lifelong vocation, and passion is contagious – even indirectly, others will take notice.
